Myspace ruins Yourlife
Yup, I said it. Myspace ruins lives. And shamefully…I’ve fed the Myspace beast.
So you say… “what is this Myspace devil-net and how can I protect myself from it’s damning tentacles?”
Firstly…Myspace is an incredibly addictive (I admit it) online social network. Basically, a not-so-personal weblog diary with pictures. According to the terms and conditions of the site, you must be at least 14 years old to join. But believe me, ANYONE can join Myspace. Users are asked to fill out a personal profile including photos, likes/dislikes in music, sexuality, religion, body type, ethnicity, education, zodiac, etc., etc. Users can browse/search for other users through common interests or photos and request to add them as “friends.” Friends can leave comments, links, pictures, etc. As you can image, people flood the place pretending to be someone(thing) that they are not (read - 14 year old girls saying they’re 21 or…30 year old dudes saying that they’re a 16 year old boy or girl). Click on myspace is gay for sad-but-true photo examples. I understand Myspace can’t control this. They respectfully CYA here . And yes…there are loads of legitimate Myspacers just being themselves.
Secondly…Myspace cannot protect YOU from YOURself. If you post it, someone will see it.
Thirdly…still don’t know what myspace is, check out…MySpace: from Answers.com
And…in case you didn’t know…
Mommies and Daddies!
1. your little 14 year old daughter is posting semi-nude pictures of herself, her address, phone number, and where she’s gonna be Friday night. Oh…is that a beer and/or a joint that I see in those pictures she posted? Smart…(see Why the internet can be a bad place to meet people. A murder in Virginia. The Taylor Behl story. )
2. your little Tommy has been posting about how he’s gonna kill himself or somebody else because he feels all alone. (see Teens Both Kept Weblogs)
3. If you still don’t know what the hell is going on, check out…Internet Safety: Internet 101 - Blog and Diary Web sites
LADIES!!!
1. As much as I enjoy the female figure(and I do)…posting semi-nude pictures of yourself does nothing for that little self-esteem issue (implants don’t fix this either - hugs/affirmation do). This is not Myporn. You can be a real adult film “star” with a few simple phone calls or web clicks.
2. And for you teen girls…posting nude/semi-nude pics is ILLEGAL. This is not Mykiddieporn (which = jail time, btw). Oh, and you might wanna googleMap your local Sex Offenders with the free US Sex Offender Registry Mapping System just to be safe.
DUDE!!!
1. Stop taking pictures of your penis & your abs. Seriously.
2. Seriously.
Recently, I saw this…
And started considering the impact this is having on people (mainly teens, tweens). So, I googled “myspace ruined mylife”and “myspace effect”…
Well I have been puting off joining myspace, but I finally had enough of being bugged by friends to join so I did it. To be honest I think it has ruined my life. I check it a thousand times a day, mostly to chat with this girl I have been seeing. I also have succummed to the blog, I filled out my first one today. I really don’t know how I feel about writing out my feeling for the world to see. I have been up to my ears in work. I’m up to an alltime high of four different jobs, oh yeah and there is school too. I have never felt so drained in my life. deviantART: ElHefe: Journal
The sites appeared on the school’s radar when administrators learned a student was communicating online with someone who was not truthful about who they were, their age and where they lived…Blogging ban provokes a debate over cyberspace
Check out the # of comments Myspace blocked on school computers.
I was going to go to sleep, really, but then I decided to be a myspace slut. I get these moments where I wander [figuratively] around alone on myspace late at night, or very drunk. And since the blinds are down and the overhead light is off, it seems like the middle of the night. Then again, my propensity to be overly amused by myspace has, effectively, ruined my life. It’s the awkward myspace condition. A m n e s i a
Yes, yes…I know this applies to all similar online activities (including blogging -wink,wink). Myspace, however, is the number one social networking site (26 million+ members) and one addictive mutha (even for adults). I do applaud Myspace for it’s inherent marketing/promotion ability & for starting the Myspace Record label which is F*ing GENIUS.
my name is fff
and I used to myspace.
Hello, fff.

Oh, please. This is entirely pathetic. It takes a lot more than a stupid website addiction to ruin someone’s life. Why is everyone attacking myspace, when someone with almost no HTML skills could easily make a webpage with just as much or more profanity on almost any web host? On myspace, it is common that people choose the setting that only lets the friends that they approve of see their complete page. This page, itself, is gay.

[...] MySpace is a free social networking internet service which enables its registered members to communicate through blogs, an internal e-mail system, web forums and more. Members can also upload and display photos and other information on their profile. History MySpace was founded in 2003 as a web portal for musicians. Artists were provided a means of sharing music as well as information on future concert locations. The website’s userbase has since grown beyond musicians and as of late-2005 there are over 42 million MySpace users. Many mainstream music groups also have promotional pages on the site and celebrities such as Jason Mraz, Dane Cook, Spiraling, Kelly Osbourne, Shane McMahon, Fall Out Boy, and Tommy Lee have said in interviews that they have or had profiles in the site. Prior to the current site, the MySpace.com domain was a virtual drive service that shut down years ago when the dot-com bubble burst. The current MySpace service was founded in July 2003 by Tom Anderson, the current President, Chris DeWolfe, the current CEO, and a small team of programmers. It was partially owned by Intermix Media, which was bought in July 2005 for $580 million by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation (the parent company of Fox Broadcasting and other media enterprises). The site is reportedly written in ColdFusion and ASP.NET and run on Microsoft Windows servers. MySpace, being the free social networking internet service that it is, allows anyone with a valid email to create a MySpace page. ProblemsMany people enjoy the freedom in MySpace to express themselves by customising their profiles. However, this freedom permits malformed HTML, CSS, videos, or Flash animations in profiles. This can sometimes render unreadable text or loud music, and may strain system resources or even crash the web browser. While most malicious code is filtered out, some users have still found ways to insert disruptive HTML.In July 2005 Kuro5hin reported a cross site scripting (XSS) vulnerability on MySpace [1]. In October 2005, a user, "Samy" exploited this vulnerability creating a worm which added millions of people to his buddy list, and forced MySpace to go offline for maintenance [2].Chain letters and messages that claim that MySpace will charge money or shut down circulate the user bulletin boards if they don’t pass the message around. MySpace solves this by saying "You dont need to pass any silly bulletins around to ’save’ your account. We don’t delete accounts for being inactive. You will never have to post a bulletin to save your account, that’s nonsense. If you got deleted, it’s because you’re underage or broke the rules.". Users are also spammed with other sorts of chain letters that can sometimes be hateful to different groups of people or even threatning. Usually, this is only a problem for newcomers to MySpace, who have never seen any message of the sort before. Regular users on the other hand, usually recognize them and skip and delete the messages, while others report those who post them. Many people use the picture feature on MySpace to display nudity and some times pornographic images although it is against the rules. This is only a problem for all viewers under the age of 18 since you don’t need to have a profile to see a user’s pictures.MySpace seems to have a policy which prohibits users under 14 but, the rule doesn’t seem the be enforced strictly as there are users who claim they are underaged on their profile without any actions being done. Some users experience chronic login problems. The site has many coding errors that have not been fixed, despite being pointed out many times (such as off-by-one errors in the number of discussion pages or replies in groups)Users commonly experience error messages such as the ubiquitous "Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred. This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group."MySpace is sometimes slow or/and unresponsive. As with other websites of the like, Myspace profiles contain people of questionable nature who propagate drug usage and confess to being addicting to them. Some members even try selling drugs on Myspace, most of the time sucessfully. The users simply post bulletins that are sent out to multiple users at a time about what they have available for sale and how they can be reached. There are criminals on MySpace looking to meet with people in person to do crimes with/to.MySpace Records MySpace sponsored the Vans Warped Tour 2005, where they had a tent. They set up signings and meet & greets from bands on the tour. Recently Tom Anderson has begun a side project called MySpace Records, a music label signing artists who have been successful through MySpace. Hollywood Undead was the first of many bands to be signed. MySpace Records released its first compilation CD on November 15, 2005. The CD has been promoted by MySpace with the promise of giving buyers four more profile pictures (bringing their picture limit to sixteen) if they send in a card which is included in the CD. Also, people who preordered their CD will get eight additional profile pictures. The CD itself features pictures of other MySpace members. Honestly, it’s just a site. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to fo near it. It’s just to ease the boredom with some little entertainment. It doesn’t ruin lives. You must be ugly or have no friends on the website. It sucks when you don’t have friends.

February 28th, 2006 at 5:11 pm
hey..after reading the article above i agree and disagree….
it COULD RUIN your life if you make the WRONG DECISIONS and you LET IT RUIN YOUR LIFE….like posting nude/semi-nude pictures of you or by putting too much information that the myspace world to see……..
and it DOES NOT ruin your life when you make the right decisons on how you use myspace…
the only thing that you think that makes myspace ruin your life is because of what’s happening in the myspace world…
but actually its because of the people in it who are dumb enough to reaaally expose themselves and choose the WRONG DECISIONS and by using myspace in a wrong way…..
it’s the people’s fault in myspace for using it in a wrong way and it DEPENDS ON HOW YOU USE THE SITE..not myspace..anywayz people make mistakes but it doesnt mean that we shouldn’t do anything about it..
soooo props to this site

i have some things to add, i was in the situation and i look back on it and think how lame it was. posting parting pictures of getting drunk and stoned on their and the reality of it all was it just got me introuble lol not worth it.

You know what really confuses me? People who say that they use MySpace to stay in contact with friends and family (i.e. Joe). Isn’t that what email is for? Ever heard of IM? I could name five different IM services that you can use to stay in touch with everyone.
Also: Who wants to bet that Ava is a hardcore MySpacer?
Also2: You didn’t metion that the retina searing profile layouts are a serious health hazard. Staring at those for hours on end will cause you to go blind sooner than wanking off.

Myspace should die, and about a week ago I had my first and only horrible experience with myspace, and I decided since I’m a nerd, I should make a page out of it.

so i decided to google “myspace ruins lives”, and ended up getting 32892389239874392 results, approximately. and thus, ended up here.
good to know I’m not the only one whos life myspace has ruined.

my husband used it for porn and pics of young girls. he was addicted. it was terrible. it’s pathetic, sure, but it happened and we almost got divorced. the half-nude/nude and underage pics + fake personas are what suck.

If anyone’s life is [semi] permanently is ruined by a social networking website I guess the cause could have been anything else too.
And what does ruined means? Permanent damage? A long road to recovery?

Myspace ruins the lives of people who dont even use it. PROOF? My husband has had Myspace since December 2005. Within two months of him joining it he turned into a man I do not recognise, he has become obsessed with its filth. He is communicating with several of the women he has found on it… not through myspace but through msn…he has internet sex with these foul people and thinks he is doing nothing wrong, its just a laugh apparently. When he was out of work he was doing it all day and night…never came away from the pc except to get food. His whole personality & being has changed, it has killed our marriage & he wants a divorce… he anounced he was leaving me to get a flat by himself..this was because he wanted to live on his own so he could do myspace every waking moment of every day without me seeing what he was up to and without me catching him ‘at it’. Yes it DOES ruin lives…the lives of the innocent families of the people who are caught up by the evil of the MySpace entity.

My sister got a myspace at the age of 15 and was on it all the time. My parents told her that the site was making her attitude go wack. and that she had to delete her profile. After a week went by my parents couldnt see a change in her attitude and added some software to her computer to see what she was doing. SHE WAS STILL GETTING ON MYSPACE! May parents showed her and she was growned.
Now that she is 20 and has moved on she has chosen that myspace is bad and has ruined her life.
And im not going to get one either!
