Since you can’t make Facebook go away, and even if you tried to, you couldn’t , you might as well deal with it. The fact of the matter is that students need to understand the long view, and they need to understand the importance of the written record. They’ve spent their entire lives online, so the problem is they are completely

Thanks guys for all the useful advice about unblocking sites. As a school network manager I will enjoy sealing up all these possible gaps in our filtering.
You see, we believe that young kids are mentally scarred by the uglier pornography and violence that appears on the internet.

Fine, educate the youngsters about the bad stuff, rather than CENSOR it all.
They will then know to avoid it.
Make it banned, and they’ll seek it out.
F* censorship.

Windblaster, if you’re really an admin, you must have some backward software running on your network if you can’t block some simple proxies. And your momma’s right. I used to spend every lunch hour in schools looking for ways to bring down the filters or bypass them. If i could do it weekly, what’re the odds that some kids’ll just find a way and not post it here? Then how’re you gonna do your job eh?
But methinks you’re some lame n00b posing as a sysop, in which case, get a hobby or even a girlfriend.

I agree. Censoring blows. At my high school, websites that are not obscene or offensive in any way are filtered. You have the option to “request” the system administrator to unblock the website, but they never listen. I doubt they even take the time to read the requests and check out the websites.

IT Tech and windblasters … good news bad news for you …
good news … yes you have a nice list of sites to block …
bad news …
1) the best way is to prevent browsing abuse is to leave everything open … LET EVERYONE KNOW its open … then track where people go … LET EVERYONE KNOW YOU ARE TRACKING THEM … THEN if i go to gmail once a day to email my girlfriend that should be accepted … if i go to etrade 10 times a day that is unacceptable … if i go to a porn site at work that is unacceptable … and repremand anyone child/student/employee for abusing that privlege … it really is that simple
2) there will be another site with another list just as long tomorrow … these places are constantly changing IPs, domain names, and dns s … why? … because YOU block sites and in turn increase the nostalgia going around your web filtering software … YOUR selection of web content filtering to handle internet abuse is why these sites thrive … very ironic
good news from #2 … job security … lol

AHHH. I am a tech at a school and I hate these stupid web filters!!! For the Administrators and ITs that think they are doing good, (no nice words fit here). Even the teachers think the blocks are stupid. Yes, some are necessary(ie. blocking known porn sites)but blocking other sites like webmail. Pretty soon all sites will be unacceptable and censorship will take over. There are still ways to get viruses and spam. There are other ways to go around the system. You will never win.

STOP PLAYING WITH YOURSELVES AND GET BACK TO WORK! School is for learning, it’s not playtime. As soon as you little punks get out into the real world, you’ll realize how little your boss cares about myspace.com and how much you missed in HS just because myspace.com wanted to make a dime off your web traffic. Those ad banners.. they’re using you. Something else to keep in mind; sexual predators LIVE on these sites. All those cute little pictures you think you’re leaving for your friends, some 30 year old slimeball is jerking off to them in his mother’s basement; once he gets tired of waiting for you to post new ones, he’ll look you up (it can be done for anyone) and rape you… Sounds like an exaggeration? It happens EVERY F*#@ING DAY! PLEASE, FOR YOUR SAKE, DON’T USE MYSPACE, FACEBOOK, XANGA, ETC. It’s not about censorship, it’s about protecting the unaware.

In response to lala:
“for all the people sayin all should work in school , y r u wasting ur time. if all peopl did was work we’d all kill ourselves.” - I’m not sure if I should dignify this with a response, but *sigh* here it goes… “wasting ur time”… hmm. who’s wasting who’s time? “Help, Help, we’re being oppressed!! My principal won’t let me update my personal website on school time!!!” Please, someone call the Waaaambulance. If you had any idea how good you american youth have it, you’d shut your little pie hole, and TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FREAKING OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTED TO YOU instead of whining all the time about things not being fair. That’s what it’s really all about. Teenage rebellion. Sit down, shut up, and listen to your f#@%*ing elders.
“For all the balding 30 year olds jerkin off , they’d jerk off to anything.” - You’re an idiot and you’re missing the point. CRIMINALS HEAVILY USE THIS WEBSITE TO FIND VICTIMS. It’s perfect for perverts. Pictures of pretty, hormone raging, adolescent girls, often with revealing details.
“if we’re safe with who we talk to whats wrong with keepin in contact with our friends. ya’ll are just wasting time.” - Please try to use complete sentences. Again, YOU are the one wasting your time, moron.
“and i agree with the smart guy( cant remeber ur name) .. make it ok and track offenders then u’ll REALLY make a difference.” - Please try to see the big picture and shut your mouth.
It sounds cliche, but the students who have a problem with internet filtering ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS are the ones who need it the most. WHY DO YOU NEED TO GO TO MYSPACE.COM DURING SCHOOL?!?!?!? PLEASE, GIVE ME ONE GOOD REASON!!!! I’m sorry to say, you won’t come up with one. Whatever it is, you can wait until you get home. Please don’t use excuses like: “My internet @ home sux.” or “I don’t have the internet” Use your friend’s or go to the public library. Whether you want to admit it or not, your teachers/parents/administrators know what’s best for you. You’re not “smarter than we think”.

Another good posibility to reach your favorit site through your school firewall is to
enter: http://google.com.mpleger.de/
The firewall thinks that you´re gooing to the search engine.

it seems to work well at my school to get past those damn blocks, but a lot of times it says that there is a “proxy error”, is there a way to get it so there isnt an error?

[...] I’m going to assume that your talking about the “Monitoring” part, and yes there is a way to get around that, and it’s simply call a “Proxy”.Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t know much about the program except from what I read from the link, but it looks like a standard monitoring tool that looks at where your going, not what your looking at.Here is a list of already set up proxies:http://www.fastandloud.com/uncategorized/blocked-school-work-filter-bypass-myspace-facebook-friendster-google-orkut-yahoo-360/and just for an example:http://www.hidemyass.com/ would be sufficient to get past your monitoring software…HoodedHoundhttp://www.rootshell.be/~hound/ [...]

Ok. It appears as though you are correct. Although my web proxy JProx http://www.monkeysigns.com/jprox does allow most to connect to MySpace and browse and read current blogs, it appears as though it currently doesn’t allow you to actually log in to your account. I will work on fixing this right away. Please check back at JProx often as I am continually making changes and enhancements. Also, if you want to post any additional feedback for it, please just leave a comment at the JProx blog http://jprox.blogspot.com
Thanks!

http://www.daveproxy.co.uk/ This website is great, i’m homeschooled and the stupid computer they sent blocks everything with content barrier X, I use this site to get onto myspace, also i’m not allowed to check my netscape mail, so I go to google, type in netscape mail, and clink on the 2nd link that comes up, I guess because its not http://www.netscape.com exactly, so it lets me get around it.
The only thing with dave proxy is that if u leave the computer for more than 10 mins u have to go to dave proxy again and sign into myspace again but otherwise its great

k well heres the deal
people like big brother are really admin’s trying to block our sites
u probably know that
but the thing is that now school filters are updated weekly sometimes daily from a “master list” of proxies and innapropriate sites
the best way to find a proxy is to get in touch with a small forum and get it from them
generally admins look for the bigger sites who have a large number of users
not the small ones with say..200 users
i have one that i go to but i wont say in case it gets blocked
btw i think that someday there will be an outbreak against the censorship in our schools
im in a webdesign class and its so unbeleivably annoying to not be able to go to anything
even our teacher is pissed off
anyways good luck and happy hunting

you idiots, stop trying to get into myspace, you act like you’re f*ing obsessed, get over it, it’s not the end of the world, and if you realllllly think you’ll die with out myspace, just get your own computer and stop mooching off “educational computers” it’s not there for your entertainment, it’s there for education, you have no idea how mad it makes me to see all these people whining because they can’t get onto myspace, GET A LIFE! omg, just think of all those gross girls and guys looking at your page. G-R-O-D-Y! they prolly put your face on bodys and update it to porn sites for all you know.
people like “big brother” are the brave ones and are actually realiazing we don’t need to follow the trend of gay old myspace. it’s gay anyway!. all you do is write about yourself, and have a competition with who has the better comments and whose layout is prettier, THAT’S ALL. i admitt, i have one, but i’m not obsessed like you freaks.

guys, please! the teachers are NOT the ones who block the websites!! it’s the IT people in the distict office!! it’s just as frustrating for us–i can’t go to wikipedia, which is an encyclopedia, for christ’s sake, or any urban legends websites, or anything considered “entertainment”/recreation! it’s hard to be creative as a teacher when half the good stuff i’d like to use is blocked. if you really want to make a difference, have your parents complain to the district office–THAT’s what makes things change! (btw: no sympathy for myspace issues–i even have a page…but i don’t go there at school.)

REPLY TO “big Brother”:
It sounds cliche, but the students who have a problem with internet filtering ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS are the ones who need it the most. WHY DO YOU NEED TO GO TO MYSPACE.COM DURING SCHOOL?!?!?!? PLEASE, GIVE ME ONE GOOD REASON!!!! I’m sorry to say, you won’t come up with one. Whatever it is, you can wait until you get home. Please don’t use excuses like: ”My internet @ home sux.” or ”I don’t have the internet” Use your friend’s or go to the public library. Whether you want to admit it or not, your teachers/parents/administrators know what’s best for you. You’re not ”smarter than we think”.
– Hmm well let’s try that im grounded at home. i can’t leave nor talk on the phone untill the school year is over. my parents both work for the state of michigan at a juvienille disiplinary center.. aka: IM F*ED YOU A-HOLE!
i can’t wait till i get home, becuase if i even dare to look at the d@mn computer im getting b!tched at. i cant go to a friends house becuase im only allowed to go TO and FROM school and on weekends i just sit watching SciFI. and libraries have myspace blocked. and my parents would probably go with my to the library and watch what i am doing. so not EVERY kid has access somehow.
obviously you don’t understand the addiction to these websites. and untill you do you can take your self centeredness and shove it. im so sick of people like you who don’t even try to think of “back in the day” and what it was like being a teenager. whatever you wanted and didn’t get you became more addicted to and did out of the ordinary things to get it. and if you are still a teenager…. well then im sorry for your loss. cause you really suck. and cleary are a dumba$$ and have NO friends. Only the cool kids chill on myspace. yo

Ironic. On this thread, the people that whine about the filters are also the ones with the worst spelling and grammar. I concede that some of them may actually be in second grade, but I’d wager that most of them are really in high school. My advice to the “filter-haters”: Better get good at flipping burgers.

I work at Best Buy Corporate in MN and just last week friday, they started blocking facebook and myspace. It f*ing sucks balls! I’ve worked here for almost a year and those sites have NEVER been blocked and they have allowed for HOURS of entertainment at work. Now, at what seems like such a random time, they decided to block the damned things. I’ve tried EVERY link above and only the last one worked. It was in german, and when i typed in http://www.myspace.com or http://www.facebook.com, it came up with “0 results”. I guess I’m kinda screwed, unless someone can figure out some amazing way to help me out. Even proxydemon is blocked by websense saying “blocked because it’s a proxy avoidance”. F*ING CENSORSHIP! Down with censorship.

for every teacher or admin out there that thinks they are smarter than kids and beleive that we dont know whats best for ours selve you are all complete morons.
I beleive that some sites should be blocked.(as a example porn sites should be blocked) but to block all sites such as myspace, xanga, aim, etc. is just stupid by doing this you are getting kids to go and search for ways to bypass the blocks and
are making them create ways to bypass the security completly. And for the adults out
there who think its good to have controll over all the web sites your children visit think of it this way how would you feel if u had no controll over the sites you visted.
Yes there are times students should not be on the internet at school using these sites but then there are also times that they should be able to use sites such as myspace and xanga. But those times which they shouldnt be using these sites they should be modeterned and at those times in which i they have free time they should be able to use these sites. And also look at it this way the goverment monitors everyone and people dont stand for that so why should student stand for
school admins to do the same and stop them from using their sites.Schools are like the goverment in a way u have the Principle which is like the president exept that the goverment only monitors u were as in school admins b stop u from visiting
these sites.Dont get me wrong school admins and parents are trying to protect us from what they think will harm us but they are doing it the wrong way in other words
for my fellow young adults they are fucking it up big time. Its time to take web blocks off for good and its also time for teachers to start doing there jobs because
if u think about when kids have to use the internet at school there should be a teacher there watching what the students do and if at that time they should be working and not playing around then the teacher could tell them to stop or to get
off the computer and at the same time if say a students done with their work then they should be able to access these sites. In other words take off the web blocks they are the dumbest idea to ever enter the school system besides the no child left behind made by president bush and his adminstration. And im not saying trust us 100% because lets face we are kids but we do not need you to block every little thing that you think is going to ruin us.For those idiots in the world(as exBig Brother ,Stephanie)this means stop being little ignorant pricks and start worring about the bigger things in life. And also big brother and stephanie i think both of u need to get drunk and get laid

are making them create ways to bypass the security completly.

[...] Interesting… it all seems completely fine to me. I’m guessing its either your firewall… or the website itself was down for a while. Anyways just check your firewall settings, and if you find that it is not the firewall… try a proxy or something. Who knows… this might work for you. Also make sure you clear your browsers cache, cookies etc… just incase. [...]

About: http://proxy11.sam-city.com/
Points to consider when looking for an Internet Anonymity Service
Software in a Box - Many companies say they offer anonymity and ship you software in a box or have you download software. Be advised that this software you install can easily capture your true IP address, e-mail address and other data and send it to the company without your knowledge. Findnot.Com can work with no software at all using windows VPN setup. Does that make you feel better, it should. We also have software we use for socks proxy connections called Sockscap which is freeware available on sites other than ours so you do not have to download it from our site to use it on our service. We also use Putty for SSH Proxy connections which is again freeware available on other sites. You do not have to download any proprietary software to use our service.
Number of Servers - Many companies have a nice website and professional looking software but only have one server. Aside from the fact that this service that looked good may be very slow, this means you are limited to appearing as if you are in one country on one IP address all the time. Some companies have a handful of servers on one line like a T-1. This means you are limited to appearing as if you are in one country only and always coming in on the same IP block. We have up to 30000 servers on many IP blocks in over 400 different countries. You can appear to be coming from 400 different countries and many different cities within the USA and Canada. It only takes a few seconds to change servers and you have all of them to use.
Log Files - Most companies will log everything you do and save these logs for years. If they are in the USA as 98% of them are, they will have to turn over the log files on any official request or subpoena and they won’t even tell you. Read their terms of service. We retain log files for a maximum of 5 days after which they are deleted from all sources. This allows us to protect our servers from being compromised by abusive users. We have never yet received a lawful subpoena valid in our jurisdiction that we would be bound to comply with. If such a subpoena was to appear one day, we have no doubt that it would require more than 5 days for it to be served upon us, most legal processes requiring information take months from the time of the act in question, not days. We doubt this policy would ever violate someone’s privacy and is in place to protect our system from abuse. We do not know of any competitive service that does not keep some sort of logs.
Peer 2 Peer (P2P) - A lot of anonymity providers will not allow Peer 2 Peer as we do. Same for FTP, so do check. You can run any internet application through our service except bulk e-mail.
Type of Connection - We offer up to 30000 servers each setup to run as a Socks Proxy, SSH Proxy or VPN. You have your choice at all times so you should be able to work around most firewalls and other annoying methods of blocking and censorship. Does the competition offer three methods of connecting? We doubt it highly.
Tracking - We have a unique proprietary method of having your tracks get lost in the shuffle. Everyone coming off a a given one of our servers has the same external IP address. This makes it extremely difficult if not impossible for anyone to trace you to one of our servers and then out again into the internet. Traffic is routed back to you by the use of not recurring session id numbers. If someone got your IP address while you using one of our servers they could not attack you or serve popups etc. since they would not have an appropriate session id since the session id must be originated by you not them. Thus our servers protect you from many different types of attacks. We also use variable user id’s but these numbers change hundreds of times a day again making tracking and tracing next to impossible. Many other services assign you a user id which stays the same forever thus facilitating tracking you. None of our competitors has even close to the amount of servers we have.
Uptime - We have a unique proprietary method we use here too. We use co-located servers around the world on different hosting company lines. Thus none of our servers ever traces back to a Whois lookup saying Findnot. Additionally since we have up to 30000 servers and up to 25000 or more are up on any given day we offer 100% uptime. 98% of our competitors have all their servers on one line in one location so if there is a problem they go down completely but it is cheaper for them this way so they do it. We us you’ll have 100% uptime.
Payment - Payment ? No man nothing. It is 100% free.
No Software installatiom - No Software on your computer.
Encryption - Does the other service offer encryption so all communications between you and our servers are encrypted so your ISP has no idea what you did, where you went or what you downloaded on the internet.
http://proxy11.sam-city.com/
Free Security Software - Does the other service give you free software to preserve your security ? Hard drive security is an important ingredient to internet privacy.
Popups and Attacks - All the Proxy and VPN based services will block attacks and pop-ups so that is not a real significant benefit since all do it.
http://proxy11.sam-city.com/
No Censorship - We have full internet with no censorship of any sort, do they?
Millions of Users - Some claim to having millions of users. When one looks carefully one sees these people offer free services like free browsing and it is the free service that has the massive amounts of users not the paid subscription service, and this figure may be intended to be the accumulated figure over the years they have been offering such services for free or otherwise. No anonymity service in the world has anything coming even close to a million paid subscribers at any one time, to the best of our knowledge and we are in the business. Don’t be deceived by advertising claims not fully explained.
Terms of Service - Do read their terms of service. Are there threats in there about if you violate any terms of service all your rights to privacy are gone? Do pay attention to the other threats as well which are also there. Also read about how they log information. Ask yourself if their backups also have logs files (of course they do)? Ask yourself if they will ever get rid of this data for real? So what is the difference if they have these logs or your ISP has these logs, especially if the service is in the USA? No difference.
Deceit - Did the competition point these things out to you or instead try to deceive you? Did they attempt to get you to think you would be more anonymous than you really would be? Were they open about how easy it would be for someone to get their logged data about your activities from them?
